Leslie Klaar
Inspired by the northern environment of her native
Alaska and of arctic Sweden where she and her husband
Jens spent several years, Leslie Klaar began painting
in earnest in the 1980's. She settled in Homer in
1985 after visiting the area for decades with her
family. She continued to pursue her interests which
included commercial crabfishing and raising her children,
Erika and Bjorn as well as studying art.
Leslie paints primarily in watercolor and sometimes uses acrylic and
pastel as well. She paints a variety of natural subjects striving to
capture their essences by balancing the literal and the abstract. She
has painted several series of works which focus on the intimate view
of the Alaskan landscape and her commentary of finding some of the less
obvious scenes the most compelling whether it is a group of rocks and
leaves, ferns on the forest floor or a group of dogwood flowers.
Leslie's works have won several awards in local and statewide juried
shows. Her paintings are currently displayed at her galleries, High Tide
Arts I & II which also features handmade knives made by Jens as well as photographs,
jewelry, paintings, leather masks and embossed prints made by other local
and Alaskan artists. High Tide Arts is open from Memorial Day until Labor
Day located at 4306 Homer Spit Road, Homer, Alaska, (907) 226-2600 summers
only.
